Ion comes from the Basque Country in the north of Spain. He grew up in a beautiful place called Donostia (Basque). The city is renowned for its Basque cuisine and boasts the second most Michelin stars per capita in the world. Ion's friends describe him as creative, competitive and clever.
We asked him some questions:
Which languages do you speak?
Spanish, Basque and English.
Where have you worked before?
I worked more than 8 years in an office as an engineer, with technical documentation for trains, but I realized that my real passion is bikes. My brother and I opened a bike shop in Donostia (San Sebastian) and I worked with him for two years. Then, my family and I moved to Gran Canaria, looking for good weather all over the year.
Tell us about your education after high school?
I am an engineer, specializing in electricity. Also I have a Master degree in industrial 3D design.
Which cycling discipline is closest to your heart?
Fixed gear… and MTB.
How did cycling become your passion?
Cycling has always been present in our family, since my mother worked at the Basque Country Cycling Federation. But I started to ride more seriously since fixed gear bikes appeared in my life.
What is your best cycling memory?
When I finished my first fixed gear race. It was in the Criterium of Gijon. I pushed to my limit, and at the finish line I was completely exhausted… I lied on the floor for a while to recover.
